P-TECH

P-TECH is a new model for secondary education that trades the traditional classroom for “innovation spaces” through group collaboration and hands-on learning. Here, students take the lead role in their learning, choosing pathways to their careers and taking college-level, credit-bearing courses. P-TECH aims to look and function more like a hybrid between college and the workplace. The 4-6 year sequence emphasizes individualized pathways to completion, workplace experiences, mentorship, in-depth project-based learning, and real-world experiences.

Rural Immersion

NAHEC partners with the SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Medicine Department of Family Medicine, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Wells College, and River Hospital of Alexandria Bay in the Rural Healthcare Immersion Program. Rural areas tend to lack widespread and accessible healthcare services in comparison to suburban and urban areas. This program promotes the local community to future healthcare providers. Through Rural Healthcare Immersion, students can see the benefits and challenges of providing healthcare in a rural environment. Students will shadow a variety of professionals at the hospital and experience life and events held in the community and surrounding areas. So far, the program has been highly accredited and extremely successful in influencing undergraduate students to continue studying medicine with the intent to bring their services to rural areas.
